The Member Who Never Came
Back
It amuses me now to think that your organization spends so much time looking for
new
members -- when I was there all the time. Do you remember me?
I am the fellow who came to every meeting, but nobody paid any attention to me.
I tried
several times to be friendly, but everyone seemed to have his own friends to
talk and sit
with. I sat down among some unfamiliar faces several times, but they did not pay
much
attention to me.
I hoped somebody would ask me to join one of the committees or to somehow
participate
and contribute.-- no one did.
Finally, because of illness, I missed a meeting. the next month no one asked me
where I had
been. I guess it did not matter very much whether I was there or not. On the
next meeting
date I decided to stay home and watch a good program on television. When I
attended the
next meeting, no one asked me where I was the month before.
You might say that I am a good guy, a good family man, that I hold a responsible
job and
love my community.
You know what else I am? I am the member who never came back.
Sister-to-Sister friendship and respect helps to define the wonderment and beauty of the Eastern Star.
In times like these, no one needs
to be alone.
The presence of an OES sister helps the sun to shine
brighter and the stars to enhance their glow.
The following poem, which I wrote helps me to understand and cherish my
commitment as an Eastern Star Sister.
My Sister, My Sister
When I rise, and my eyes are still closed from the gloom of yesterdays despair,
I know that there is a bright five-color star, which knows my hurt and will soon
be there.
Whenever, the frailty of my body precludes my performance of my daily deeds,
I know that my sisterhood keeps me in prayer and will soon attend to my needs.
Let not my heart be troubled or hang my head in a deep mire of unhappiness,
For not too long from now a fellow star will knock on my door and ensure my
cheerfulness.
Let not the labors of the long day cause me to be depressed and on the brink of
tears,
For I know that am part of a sisterhood, and I know that someone will take the
time to care!
Sisterly love and concern should always be a part of our mindset and agenda. It
is not even to wear the star proudly and perform the numerous tasks of the
organization. It is just as important to maintain a friendship chain by calling,
visiting, entertaining, fellowshipping or just being present when needed. It is
this bond of friendship, which will make our organization strong and will ensure
that the Order of the Eastern Star will forever flourish.
Fraternally Yours,
Lois Perkins
A Christmas Greeting !©1998
The time, once more, is drawing near
To think of sharing Christmas cheer
With friends and family, young and old
All joyous, as events unfold
That raise the consciousness, of man
To thoughts of love and peace… again.
I wish that I could guarantee
To share with you, your Christmas tree.
To raise a glass and drink a toast
To you and yours, my would-be host.
For there is neither kin nor kith
I’d rather share this season with.
But, I am here and you are there
This wondrous time we’ll only share
Within our thoughts, so, thus I say
I’ll think of you on Christmas day.
And trust you’ll spare some thoughts for me
While you enjoy your Christmas tree.

TAKE
TIME FOR NEW FACES!
I see you at the meeting
But you never say hello.
You’re busy all the time you’re there
With those you already know.
I sit among the members
And yet I’m a lonesome guy.
The new ones are as strange as I,
But you old members pass me by.
But darn it, you folks asked me in,
And talked of fellowship.
You could just step across the room
But you’ve never made the trip.
Why can’t you nod and say hello,
Or stop and shake my hand,
Then go and sit among your friends –
Now, that I’d understand.
I’ll be at your next meeting –
Perhaps, a nice time to spend.
Do you think you could introduce yourself?
I want to be your friend.
Friendship
The Friend Who Just Stands By
When trouble comes your soul to try
You love the friend who just stands by
Perhaps there's nothing she can do,
The thing is strictly up to you
For there are troubles all your own
And paths your soul must tread alone.
Times when love can't smooth the road
Nor friendship lift the heavy load,
But just to feel you have a friend
Who will stand by until the end.
Whose sympathy through all endures,
Whose warm handclasp is always yours,
It helps somehow to pull you through
Although there's nothing he can do.
And so with fervent heart we cry,
"God bless the friend who just stands by!"

Why the Poppy?
A writer first made the connection between the poppy and battlefield deaths
during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century, remarking that fields that
were barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting
ended.
During the tremendous bombardments of the First World War the chalk soils became
rich in lime from rubble, allowing 'popaver rhoeas' to thrive. When the war
ended the lime was quickly absorbed, and the poppy began to disappear again.
After John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields was published 1915 the poppy became
a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle.
Three years later an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City
YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died
on the battlefield.
During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame Guerin, learned
of the custom. On her return to France she decided to use handmade poppies to
raise money for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country. In
November, 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada.
Thanks to the millions of Canadians who wear flowers each November, the little
red plant has never died. And neither have Canadian's memories for 116,031 of
their countrymen who died in battle.
Secrets of Serenity
These inspiring thoughts will help you find the place inside yourself where you can be at total peace. What you think and feel will influence your health.
When the mind is peaceful, inner energies wake up and work miracles for us - without any conscious effort on our part.
The use of love is to heal. When it flows without effort from the depth of the self, love creates health.
Happiness radiates like the fragrance from a flower and draws all good things to you.
Healthy people live neither in the past nor the future. They live in the present, in the now, which gives the now a flash of eternity because no shadows fall across it.
An intimate relationship allows you to be yourself.
Accept what comes to you totally and completely so you can appreciate it, learn from it and then let it go.
When life is full, it is only love, and when our awareness is full it brings only love. Every impulse of intelligence in our awareness starts its journey from the source of life as love.
Your mind gives you control, the ability to have any reaction you want.
Health is not just the absence of a disease. It's an inner joyfulness that should be ours all the time - a state of positive well-being.
Enchantment is our natural state.
Attend to your own inner health and well-being.
Allow your love to nourish yourself as well as others. Do not strain after the needs of life - it is sufficient to be quietly alert and aware of them. In this way, life proceeds more naturally and effortlessly. Life is here to enjoy.

IF
(Abridged quote from Rudyard Kipling's "If")
"If you can keep your head when all around you
are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtues,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds 'worth of distance run.
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!"
